Week of 2.8

I'm so proud of my math and reading students this term. In math, they have been working hard on creating plans to solve multi-step word problems and working on making estimates to check their computation.
In reading, we have been identifying examples of figurative language in poetry and prose, working on identifying theme in myths (4th), poetry, chapter books, and drama.

Here is a helpful link to use at home for skill practice:

4th Grade EIP Math Focus:

I have continued focusing on the standards from terms 1-3. The students are getting computation practice working with the ixl website. Specifically, we are practicing our rounding skills to make reasonable estimates to check 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problems and 3 digits divided by 1 digit problems. In addition, the students are practicing their computation skills by applying it to problem solving.

Specific standards addressed:
4.OA.3 Solve multi-step word problems with whole numbers and having whole number answers using the four operations, including problems when remainders must be interpreted.\

4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base ten numerals, expanded form, and number names. Compare two multi-digit numbers

4.NBT.3 Use place understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.

4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers.

4th Grade EIP Reading Focus:

I am working with the students to quote accurately from a text when drawing inferences. The texts we are using to practice this reading skill is; dramas, poetry and fiction. The students have continued to analyze the theme in poetry and we also added myths. The students will explore the characteristics of myths and the theme.

5th Grade EIP Math Focus:

Specific standards addressed:
NBT. 4 Use place value understanding to round decimals to the hundredths.
NBT.6 Fluently divide up to 4 digit dividends by 2-digit divisors
NBT.7 Multiply and divide decimals to the hundredths, using models and strategies based on place value.

I have continued focusing on the standards from terms 1-3. Currently, I'm focusing on decimal multiplication and division through multi-step word problems. In addition, students are practicing their rounding skills by estimating the products and quotients. The students are also practicing these skills in math tasks from the Georgia Frameworks.

5th Grade EIP Reading Focus:

I am working with the students to quote accurately from a text when drawing inferences. The texts we are using to practice this reading skill is; dramas, poetry and fiction. In poetry and fiction the students are inferring the theme of the text and the author's feelings on a topic. Students are also reading dramas that focus on the history of what they are studying in social studies.

Week of 1/19 and Week of 1/25

4th Grade EIP Math Focus:

I am revisiting the standards from terms 1-3 and making sure students have a handle on the previously taught standards. Currently, I'm focusing on whole number addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through multi-step word problems. The students are getting the computation practice as well as strategies to make a plan when solving word problems.

Specific standards addressed:
4.OA.3 Solve multi-step word problems with whole numbers and having whole number answers using the four operations, including problems when remainders must be interpreted.

In addition, the students are analyzing the differences between drama, prose, and poetry and using key vocabulary to identify the differences:
-verse, rhythm, meter
-casts of characters, scenes, dialogue,, stage directions
-chapters, dialogue, table of contents

5th Grade EIP Math Focus:

I am revisiting the standards from terms 1-3 and making sure students have a handle on the previously taught standards. Currently, I'm focusing on decimal addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through multi-step word problems. In addition, students are practicing their rounding skills by estimating the sums, differences, products, and quotients. The students are also practicing these skills in math tasks from the Georgia Frameworks.

5th Grade EIP Reading Focus:

I am working with the students to quote accurately from a text when drawing inferences. The texts we are using to practice this reading skill is; dramas, poetry and fiction. The students are inquiring why an author chooses to organize a text by chapters, stanzas, or scenes.
